11th C. Basilica of Aquileia

Located in an ancient Roman city, this Romanesque-Gothic style Basilica has been an ongoing architectural development since its original foundations were first laid in 313 AD as a dedication to the Virgin Mary and the saints Hermagora and Fortunatus. Since its beginnings, the Basilica was rebuilt in the 11th century, and massive additions and embellishments were made during various periods, resulting in a magnificent showcase of architectural and religious history.
The Basilica’s interior is impressive and emits a heavy spiritual ambiance. The entire floor of the nave is covered in detailed mosaic tiles that date back to the 4th century and, at nearly 8,200 square feet, it is the largest Paleo-Christian mosaic in the world. Walk through the majestic space and take in the varying design styles that were added or altered throughout the Basilica’s history: the hull-shaped timber roof was added in the 15th century; the Byzantine-style frescos in the Crypt date back to the 12th century; and the Apsidal frescos were added during the 11th century rebuild. The town of Aquileia is one of the greatest archaeological reserves of its kind and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
